37 TRAVEL OVERSIXTY.COM.AU | ISSUE 2 | 2022 Captivating Copenhagen Continued from page 32 These tours are very reasonably priced and take approximately one hour, and are com- plete with a guide who will point out all the historic monuments that the city has to offer. Another must-visit destination is Tivoli: the third-oldest amusement park in the world. Whether or not you’re one for rides, the gar- dens of Tivoli are extraordinary all on their own, and are laced with delicious restaurants. Tivoli also puts on a daily pantomime in an open air theatre that has been running since the 1800s, which nowadays also features ballet and modern dance performances. If you are looking for a truly unique expe- rience, take a trip to Freetown Christiania, a “free state” that is often dubbed a hippie paradise, that operates independently of the rest of Copenhagen. Enjoy the markets and scenery of Christi- ana, but be aware of its firm no photos rule – what happens in Christiania, stays there! Fabulous food Copenhagen has an internationally re- nowned food scene, with many traditional dishes that simply must be experienced One Danish specialty is Smørrebrød, a tra- ditional Danish open sandwich. Usually served on dark rye bread, Smør- rebrød is stacked up with the most delicious toppings, and most establishments serving the traditional dish offer a range of different toppings – the hardest part is choosing. Another surprising thing about the Danish food scene is their love of street hotdog stands. Similar to those found in America, a hot dog stand can be found on virtually every corner of Copenhagen, with each one offer- ing delicious street hot dogs. Another magnet for foodies is Sankt Ped- ers bakery, offering mouthwatering cinna- mon scrolls and Danishes every day of the week. Established in 1612, this famous es- tablishment is the oldest bakery in the city. And of course, no visit to Copenhagen would be complete without sampling their world-renowned ice-cream.
